Author Yang-May Ooi’s new book, Bound Feet Blues – A Life Told in Shoes, signed by Urbane Publications is due out in November 2015.
My publisher Matthew Smith of Urbane Publications has confirmed to me that the publication date for Bound Feet Blues, the book will be early November this year. The aim is to bring it out to co-incide with the 3 week run of Bound Feet Blues, the show, at the Tristan Bates theatre. The book will be available at the theatre as well as at all good bookshops and also via online bookstores.
I am pleased to report that I have finished the first draft of the manuscript and will be spending this week editing it in readiness for submission to Matthew in June. My focus is on pulling together all the threads that I have woven through the body of the book to craft a fully rounded finish to the 122,000+ word story.
The book goes behind the scenes of the solo show that I developed during 2014 to discuss the creative process that led me to move from novelist to theatre performer. The frame of my scratch night performance of Bound Feet Blues in March 2014 opens and closes the book and is a way in to exploring the family and personal stories that inspired the one hour solo show. The book then tells the story of my tomboy childhood in Malaysia and my transformation from gawky kid to super feminine young woman in Oxford, and eventually to confident creative artist. Interwoven within that personal story are stories from several generations of my family from migration out of China to settlement in Malaya and our connection with the creation of the new nation of Malaysia.
As the show is inspired by a true story so the book is inspired by the show but each stands alone as a distinct creative work in its own right. You can watch the show and never need to read the book. You can read the book without ever seeing the show. Or you can take in both of them. The choice is yours. Either way, my hope is that a reader/ theatre goer will be able to engage with the universal themes within the personal stories in each of them.
